Here’s What Others Have to Say

Happy New Year! I didn’t realize we haven’t made a blog post since the turn of the calendar…

Over the past couple weeks, we’ve been working hard to spread the word about what we’re building at gametiime.com – a place that makes finding races simple.

Thus far, we’ve had a great response with many people, particularly runners and triathletes, sharing the love about how much they think something like Gametiime is needed. Let’s face it, finding races can be a chore.

Check out these comments by some of our Twitter followers…

Thank you all for your support. Time to get back to building.

The Boston Marathon and a Culture of Inclusion

I witnessed a moment in history this weekend. It made me think about a similar parallel in the race world. I think we are all better off that both occurred.

It was 1967…

“K.V. Switzer” stepped up to the starting line, donning bib number 261, and proceeded to start one of the world’s most well-known running events. But, there was something a little different about this annual gathering 35 years ago.

For 70 years preceding that particular race, stemming back to its inception in 1897 – making it the second-longest continuously running race in North America – the Boston Marathon was a men’s-only competition. Women were forbidden from officially entering the event until 1972.

Fast forward to 2012…

I was driving north on 4th Ave in Downtown Seattle this weekend. I came to a stoplight and noticed to my right a crowded of people lining each side of the staircase ascending down from Seattle City Hall. There were lights shining up the corridor and a local news camera crew stood at the base of the steps. A couple, both men, walked steadily down the stairs hand-in-hand – their faces smiling wildly. They had just gotten married and, under the recently-passed marriage equality laws in our State of Washington, they were allowed the right to do so.

I couldn’t help but think about that story I’d read about the 1967 Boston Marathon. “K.V. Switzer” turned out to be Katherine Switzer, the first woman to run the full Boston Marathon as an official entrant. She was forbidden at the time. Race official Jock Semple physically attempted to stop her from continuing on once word spread that she was in it. She finished in 4 hours and 20 minutes. The picture below made worldwide news.

Today, the Boston Marathon plays host to 43% of its 25,000+ annual entrants as women runners. Nationally, women account for 55% of the 14 million race finishers per year.

Whether are you are male or female, gay or straight, black or white, young or old, fast or slow…

We are creating a community where everyone is an athlete and everyone is a contributor. Gametiime will be a place open to any and all to enjoy the universal language of sports. We look forward to providing this: a culture of inclusion.

Pursuing your dreams is tough…

I had a friend call me last night. I hadn’t heard from him in quite some time, but he wanted to bounce something off of me that was weighing on his mind. It was a new job opportunity. And, it was a pay cut. I spoke to him about the existing factors and, as I asked him more contextual questions, I found myself hearing what I figured I would.

He already knew the answer. And that answer, though risky, did not come down to life and death. It came down to pursuing his dream and doing what he felt others would deem acceptable.

It reflected a sentiment to which I often return; we are taught to fear. We are also taught what should be done. That is, take the path of least resistance. Don’t put yourself in a risky situation at the expense of safer alternatives. Look to what others have done and follow the words of the “wisest”. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

We all know how success is supposed to look.

I certainly agree that life is made up of some big decisions, whereby, we as individuals need to make the sensible choice. Granted. But I find myself reminded, time and again, of what I wholeheartedly believe. Those choices ultimately should not be made by anyone else but one’s own self. For you, and you alone, know who you truly want to become. Therein lies the crossroads between what others believe you should be as opposed to what your dreams depict. While they may or may not be similar, those two things will never be exactly the same. And, for that reason, pursuing your dreams is always tough.

I chose to pursue my dreams.

I quit my perfectly-good job earlier this year. I started Tenacity Sports, a piece of the picture of who I truly want to become. And, it’s been tough. It’s walking the unbeaten path when many others are walking the one more traveled. When asked (even by those closest to me) why I’ve chosen such a journey for myself, the only true reason I can express is simply, “To get there”.

“There” is that place that only I know in my mind. It is fundamentally inexplicable and undefined, but it is the underlying hope that drives me to wake each day, face the critics, challenges, and uncertainty that lie before me, and attack it with everything I have. “There” is that place I will land, ever so luckily or magically in the eyes of others – knowingly, to me, that it wasn’t quite so coincidental.

It’s taking steps backward to move forward. It’s delayed gratification and contrary to popular belief. It’s lonely, trying, and often misunderstood. And, as much as it might not make sense in the eyes of many, it makes absolute sense in mine. The answer is simply, “To get there”.

I will. Don and I (and anyone else that joins us in building Gametiime in the future) will. And to my friend, I believe the same will bode true for you as well – as long as you attack it with everything you have.

I love what I do, every single day…

Just another one of my random thoughts: I am humbled, grateful, and invigorated by the thought of what I am doing today and every day. Having the opportunity to work on something like Tenacity Sports, and now Gametiime specifically, is truly a blessing and something that I appreciate dearly.

When I step back and think about it, what lies at the core of Gametiime is something that has the opportunity to do so many great things: (1) bring awareness to causes like cancer that are behind many of the events we will feature on our site in the future, (2) bring people together to share in relationship-building and life-enhancing experiences like marathons, team sports, and kids activities, (3) serve as a motivator for people to live an active and healthy lifestyle, and much more.

To my friends and family, new and old, that give their hands in helping us to build this from the ground up, whether that’s by passing along our name, spreading the word about us in the news, or simply rooting us on with some good “vibes”, thank you so much.

It has always been my dream to build something that positively impacts the world in the best way I know how. Here’s to giving my best effort…

So how are Tenacity Sports and Gametiime associated?

Another great question by one of our Facebook followers, Phong Nguyen. Here is our answer:

Tenacity Sports is our company. We will continue to operate (legally) under that name, much like Instagram operated under the company name Burbn before the Facebook acquisition. (New fun fact for you?)

To start, Tenacity Sports began as an event management company. We ran leagues and tournaments with broader plans to use technology to build a stronger, more cohesive community around our events. We planned to introduce concepts like gamification and holistic statistics that are innovative in today’s rec sports world. We’d then platform this technology to other rec sports organizations and, perhaps, even other use cases in the events world.

Now, we have pivoted. Given the opportunity we see, our sole focus is on developing the best possible website for discovery of sports activities that we can build at http://gametiime.com. We will no longer run our own events through Tenacity Sports, but it will remain in our DNA. We have learned so much from that experience with regards to what sports mean to us as a society, the determinants of running a successful event management company, and many other things. These make up the foundation of Gametiime.

In the end, Tenacity Sports is our company and Gametiime is our product.

Our mission remains the same: To give people a platform for socially-engaging experiences through sports.
